You Are What You Practice

As many people in the industry know, John Wooden, the famous basketball coach from UCLA, has been a mentor through his words and his life. What few know is the fact that he was given a card by his father after graduating from elementary school. On one side of the card was the following:

7 Things to Do:

  1. Be true to yourself
  2. Help others
  3. Make each day your masterpiece
  4. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible
  5. Make friendship a fine art. Build a shelter against a rainy day
  6. Pray for guidance and count and give thanks for your blessings every day

Wooden would keep that card the rest of his life. He also firmly believed that you had to practice the values you wanted to keep.

At ASG we have a number of values on our wall that I often refer to in my addresses to the company. We call these “The ASG Way”.

These values make a good poster on the wall. We can show them off to our clients and partners as a testament to who we strive to be.

But I consider this to be a living document. It breathes and acts through the practice of our people. And as we head into the New Year, I once again post them for all to see. I know that when I tell others who I want to be and ask for accountability. In The ASG Way, we chose to create a series of actionable statements that we believed would define our service and our character. In 2017, we have a new year to grow stronger toward who we want to be:

The ASG Way

  1. We have a Sense of Urgency
  2. We have Integrity
  3. We follow Core Processes
  4. We Create and Embrace Change
  5. We are Empowered
  6. We Collaborate
  7. We are Accountable
  8. We are Innovative
  9. We are Professionals
  10. We are Passionate about Service
  11. We are always Learning
  12. We enjoy what we do and who we work with
