The New Buzz Word: PSIM Does it Apply?

I would like to take a closer look at one of the highly talked about buzz words at ISC West – PSIM. As a relatively new term used in
the industry, it is important first to know how it is defined as well as if it is something that can be applied across channels and organizations alike.
According to Wikipedia, Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) is a category of software that provides a platform and applications created by middleware developers, designed to integrate multiple unconnected security applications and devices and control them through one comprehensive user interface.
It collects and correlates events from existing disparate security devices and information systems (video, access control, sensors, analytics, networks, building systems, etc.) to empower personnel to identify and proactively resolve situations.
PSIM integration has numerous organizational benefits, including increased control, improved situation awareness as well as management reporting. Ultimately, these solutions allow organizations to reduce costs through improved efficiency and to improve security through increased intelligence.
Another definition of PSIM by Security Dreamer is: “Technologies and processes to collect, understand, and respond to data relevant for security. Products in this category variously offer aggregation, visualization, system control, incident response and reporting.”
So with all these definitions, I ask, does it really work? Some industry experts are giving it kudos for being a great concept, but also point out the structural problems that could limit its advantage to the largest of security organizations. Video and access systems will continue to bring new features providing essential aspects of PSIM with greater dependability, at a lower price.
After speaking with others from the industry, I’m ready to pose the question: Can PSIM really add value to a private organization or is it really the purview of public agencies that can use the multiple data streams to maximize their governance, risk & compliance?
