The Great Conversation Continues...

By Nigel Waterton, Director of Business Development

CrossroadsWere you part of the The Great Conversation at the 2011 ASG Summit?  This year we heard from top industry leaders that a shift in thinking is underway in the entire security industry.  An example of one of those shifts and a major trend that we heard about is that the "C Suite" is beginning to embrace security as an integral part of the business landscape.  Executives are starting to see how security can be leveraged to measure and reduce the overall risk to an organization.  Considering recent world events, this shift in thinking couldn't be more timely.

As industry professionals are you recognizing the significance of this change?

It seems that the ASG Summit keeps improving year after year.

The 'Great Conversation' enhanced the event even more so.

The level of attendees also was elevated this year.

With regard to your suggestion that world events will help facilitate 'C Suite" embrace of security is interesting.

I suspect that whatever the cause the prime motivator is when a business has a 'self-interest' in security then it will be invited to the 'C Suite'. The key is to contin ue to 'drip' on the decision makers with information that helps realize their self-interest.

Good to see you again Nigel, you and ASG are eveywhere.

This year’s ASG Summit was an unprecedented experience for Exacq. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to be a sponsor at the Conversation and look forward to doing this again next year. As a manufacturer, we now enjoy being a major contender in the VMS/NVR marketplace. With our growth has come exceptional perspective of the industry we all live and breathe every day. As far as we all have come as an industry, we still have so much opportunity to grow. We have such marvelous new technology advances happening daily. But I’ve found that most are all still using these new tools the same old way. Just because the technology advances doesn’t mean the methodology stays the same. As technologies advance, the way in which we think about security must evolve as well. Most integrators today do not exploit all the new, powerful capabilities available. ASG is a pioneer in that they recognize the shift that’s taking place. No longer is this just about technology. No longer does a major organization “just need security”. Today, in order to compete in this market, the manufacturers and integrators must embrace this new trend if they are to succeed. ASG understands that. Security today means much more than recording video and locking doors. Today we can tie high resolution cameras to a server that adds intelligence to that video. That video server can be partnered with an access control system. That access control system can talk to the marketing and human resources department. With all of technologies that used to be disparate now able to work together, this brings a whole new level of intelligence and value to the overall system. The question is, what are we going to do with all this new trove of devices and data. ASG embraces this new vision and excels in the pursuit to leverage that level of interconnectivity in new ways in order to minimize the overall risks today’s organizations face.

Two things really stood out to me at this years event. The first was the quality of the attendees and the second was the level of engagement that was occuring everywhere. Great job and I look forward to the continuation of The Great Conversation through out the year.

The Great Conversation, 2011 was a wonderful event and an unqualified success. Great opportunity to engage with thought leaders and security practitioners spanning all areas of the security profession. I saw a higher level of engagement than the previous year. But what was really gratifying was the tie-in to last year's theme of Security Leadership and how this subject, and the evolution of our profession as an integral part of the enterprise, continues to be a important to all participants. Excellent program, well organized and executed!
