Creating the Resilient Organization Through Security

The Security Industry is my life. A quick look at my C.V. will detail that for you.  Having started as an industry trainer in 1993 and receiving a Guard license in 1998 I have watched our industry change many times in response to societal demands.  Our Industry is maturing very rapidly, and now represents a significant worldwide market for goods and services.

Every time I speak and/or train security industry groups I ask them a pointed question:  “This all sounds great but how do I convince Management to pay for it?”  This single question is indicative of the paradigm shift in our industry.  It is no longer just about the three “g’s” Guards, Gates, and Guns, it is about making the business case for what we do.

The Enterprise Security professional touches all aspects of Security and Risk Management and in doing so also touches all professional aspects of the Enterprise.  The CEO, CFO, CIO, COO, CHRO, and CTO are just learning how to interact with the CSO!  Part of the responsibility for the education of the “C” suite resides with the Security Professional.  But in order to be effective trainers we first have to study ourselves.

Understanding our impact on the enterprise including:

• Our internal and external relationships (critical interdependencies),
• The ability to identify all forms of Enterprise Risk in regard to those relationships, and
• Having a firm grasp of core business management principles

is only the beginning.

In my upcoming presentation for The Great Conversation titled: “Building the Resilient Organization Through Security”, we will address and answer three core questions:

• Are you a Change Agent or are you part of the Status Quo?
• What is Resilience and why should I care?
• How do I help create a resilient organization through security?

I look forward to meeting you, answering these questions and more on March 8th 2011 at 2:15 PM.

Jeff: It seems alot of people are confused about the difference between organizational resilience and, specifically, organizational resilience through security. Looking forward to you clarifying at the Summit
