Missed the 2010 ASIS International Seminar?

ASIS stageHere's Your Recap:

Members of ASG’s Sales, Operations, and Engineering teams attended the 2010 ASIS International Seminar and Exhibits in Dallas, Texas a few weeks ago. If you missed the event, here are some very useful links to catch up on the great training seminars and events that occurred during the week. We also have a brief run-down on some of the things we saw at the show that drew our interest and show much promise for future security solutions.

ASIS General Session Recap
If you managed to miss one of the General Sessions at ASIS, you can listen to the speaker by visiting ASIS International’s Sessions Video page (it’s only audio, but worth a listen). These sessions include:

  • Guns in the Workplace: Legal, Policy and Training
  • Breaking the Code: Lessons Learned from Military, Federal and Corporate Security Transitions
  • Is Your Video System Smarter than a 5th Grader? Functionality and Technology of Video Surveillance Systems
  • How the Great Recession has Changed Security
  • Security Profiling: Overcoming the Controversy
  • A Cartel Hemisphere: Protecting International Interests in Today’s Most Enticing Emerging Markets
  • Bioterrorism: Understanding the Threat and Designing Responses
  • Social Networking, Media and Professional Development for the Physical Security Professional

If video isn’t your thing, or you’re interested in something not covered in the general sessions, Security Management Magazine has comprehensive coverage of the 2010 ASIS Seminar.

New Technology Recap
Every year we send some of our team to ASIS to look at the new technology and solutions that are introduced at the show. This year, we spotted a few solutions that hold promise.

  • Axis Mobile Recording Solution
Earlier this year, Axis Communications released a mobile recording solution ideal for organizations that need mobile surveillance such as public transportation. While we haven’t yet benchmarked this technology, we were told at ASIS that the solution comes preloaded with Axis recording software, but allows you to load any VMS you choose, allowing you to have a common VMS throughout your organization. We think that’s a very nice feature.
  • RIMAGE Automated DVD & Blu-ray Disc Storage
RIMAGE offers an automated backup and storage solution that integrates directly with some of our favorite VMS’s, including Milestone, and will back up to Blu-ray Disk for advanced storage capacity. This solution may be ideal for those needing long-term storage or video archiving where idle hard drive data corruption could be an issue.
  • Theia Technologies, Immervision, and GBO lenses
So many people focus on the newest, fanciest technologies and forget that a little innovation in the fundamental components of a solution can have a huge impact. We feel that the advances in lens technology from these three manufacturers may be taking uncommon views such as 360 degree and wide angle a step further.

Emerging Trends Recap
Cloud computing, wireless applications and information management continued to be evidenced in vendor exhibits and in forums in and around the conference. More than ever we believe a thorough review of your security processes and tools, as well as your risk profile, is necessary before purchasing these products. We will continue to monitor and benchmark these applications as they mature.

Disclaimer
While each piece of technology shows promise, we have to disclose that our engineers haven’t had the chance to get their hands on the technology and run them through their paces yet. We never recommend any technology or product until we’ve had a chance to benchmark its capabilities and ensure that it will function as intended in the field; but we do look forward to getting some of these new innovations on our test bench to see what they can really do.
