Innovations that Bridge the Gap - Speco Technologies' Role in Delivering Hybrid Video Solutions

By Ron Worman, The Sage Group

IP Video is the answer. But what is the question?

Speco Blog Photo II spoke with Gary Perlin, VP of Video Products with Speco Technologies and he believes the question everyone should be asking is: What will this do to my network infrastructure?

"We believe that many end users are swallowing the marketing hype before investigating the true cost of the IP camera on the network", said Perlin. "The cost is the interference with mission critical enterprise applications. The cost is the level of expectation of the security department that is never realized because the network cannot support it. And the cost is not bridging the gap with your existing analog cameras."

According to Perlin, the IP market represents only 5% of all cameras sold; 3% in the USA. He also cites industry leaders like Pelco and Bosch that are issuing statements to their user communities that they are recommitted to their analog business.
The answer, according to Perlin: "Megapixel cameras on an analog infrastructure. We are developing all of our network cameras with analog outputs", said Perlin. "We believe in hybrid solutions."
Perlin emphasized that this provides the security professional with a future upgrade path without creating false expectations of performance and costly network problems.

Speco Blog Photo IISpeco has also been very active with the HDcctv Alliance. HDcctv-based systems transmit HDTV signals digitally over conventional CCTV media without packetization and without any perceivable compression latency.

"HDcctv will enable Speco Technologies' dealers to use existing coaxial cable infrastructure to deliver megapixel resolution images to their customers", said Perlin, who was quoted in a recent press release. "The ability to accomplish this without entering the IP world will allow a greater cross section of installers to compete for the ever-growing megapixel business. HDcctv products will be a perfect alternative to the megapixel IP cameras that we already sell."

At the Summit, attendees will be able to interview the Speco team about the differences in analog vs. IP based cameras and what Speco is doing to help the industry transition. Visit Speco Technologies' booth in the Virtual Exhibit Hall leading up to the Summit and learn more about their security solutions.
